Privacy Policy

Effective TODO: date Last updated 2026-10-25

Spellsketch helps you learn English with pictures: you look at a picture, say what you see in English, and only what you say shows up in your picture. We collect very little, and this policy explains what, why and what you can do about it.

01Who we are

Spellsketch is made by TODO: legal name (individual or company), based in Taiwan (“we”, “us”). We decide how your personal data is used, which makes us the data controller under the GDPR and the collector under Taiwan’s Personal Data Protection Act.

Questions about privacy: support@spellsketch.com · Postal address: TODO: address · Phone: TODO: phone.

Our representative in the European Union: TODO: name and contact. In the UK: TODO: name and contact.

02What this policy covers

The Spellsketch app for iPhone and iPad, including beta versions on TestFlight; this website, spellsketch.com; and emails you send us.

03What we collect

DataWhat it isWhy we need it
Account The account identifier from Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, and your email address. Both go through Supabase Auth. From Google we ask only for your email address, not your name or profile picture. With Apple, if you use Hide My Email, we only see Apple’s relay address. If a sign-in service sends us a name anyway, we don’t store it. To sign you in, keep your account, and reach you about your account or a support request.
Members A nickname (up to 20 characters), a built-in avatar, the level, the app’s language, and the member’s practice settings: timer, one-word hints and voice speed. No age or birthday. To pick pictures at the right level, practice the way each member chose, and keep each member’s progress separate.
Descriptions and results The text of each description (typed, or spoken and turned into text on the device), the picture it describes, and the result: which details it covered, stars, feedback, the picture shown, and the outcome of the content check. To score each try, show the picture that matches what was said, and show each member their progress.
Spell Book The words a learner has learned or saved, how their reviews went, and for each learned word, the sentence and picture where it was first said right. To bring words back in later pictures for review, and to let the learner use their words to make their own pictures.
Trying without an account If you try a picture before signing in, a temporary account ID and that try’s description and result, kept like any other account’s. To let you try Spellsketch before setting up an account, and to keep your result if you then sign in.
Purchases For App Store subscriptions: the transaction records Apple sends us (product, transaction ID, dates, status). For a founding-member pre-order on our website: your email, the order and its payment status from our payment provider. We never see your card number. To unlock what you paid for, and to keep the records tax law requires.
Usage events Things you do in the app, such as opening it, finishing a try, reporting a wrong result or opening the subscription page, with the app version and the iOS version. To see what works and what doesn’t, fix problems, and stop automated or abusive use.
Server logs IP address, time and the request, recorded by our servers and providers. Security, preventing abuse, and fixing errors.
Support emails What you write to us and your email address. To help you.

A description is about the picture, so we never need personal details in it. Please don’t include a full name, address, school or phone number, and use a nickname rather than a real name. We don’t ask for any of these, and nothing a learner says is ever shown publicly. Our content check looks for harmful content; it doesn’t find or remove personal details. If you notice one, email us and we’ll delete that description.

04What we don’t collect

05How we use it

We use your data only for the purposes below. If you’re in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, the legal basis for each is in brackets.

We don’t sell personal data, share it for advertising, or build advertising profiles. Scoring is automatic, but it only affects practice results; it never makes decisions with legal or similarly significant effects on anyone.

Account and member IDs, and IP addresses. We use these only to run Spellsketch: to sign you in, keep each member’s data separate, send the app its pictures, count reasonable-use limits, keep the service secure, fix errors, and count things like how many tries a picture takes. They are never used to contact anyone, to build a profile of a person, or for advertising, and they are never shared for those purposes.

Choosing what to review. When a learned word is due for review, we pick a picture that includes it. This uses only that member’s own progress in Spellsketch; it isn’t used for anything else.

06Improving the judge

Judging gets fairer when we can check it against real descriptions.

07Who processes it for us

We share data only with service providers that help us run Spellsketch, under agreements that let them use it only on our instructions and require them to keep it secure. None of them may use it for their own purposes. We don’t give your data to anyone else, and we add a provider to this list before it receives any data:

ProviderWhat they doWhat they receive
Supabase Sign-in (Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google both go through Supabase Auth) and our database. Everything in section 3 except support emails.
Google Cloud Runs our servers and keeps their request logs. What the app sends our servers. The logs record IP address, time and which request was made, not what was said.
Cloudflare Stores the pictures and sends them to the app (Cloudflare R2). Requests for picture files: your IP address and which picture was requested. No account data.
Anthropic and OpenAI These AI services do two jobs. Anthropic’s Claude judges which details of the picture a description got right. OpenAI checks descriptions against our content rules, with Anthropic as the backup when OpenAI is unavailable. Nobody chats with these AI services; they only return a result to our servers. The description text and the picture’s details. Never an account, email, nickname or member. Requests come from our servers, not your device. Under both providers’ terms, what we send is not used to train their models. OpenAI’s content check doesn’t store it. Anthropic deletes it TODO: within 30 days, or “right away” once zero data retention is approved, unless its safety systems flag it for abuse, in which case it may keep it for up to 2 years.
Apple Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases, TestFlight. What Apple collects is covered by Apple’s privacy policy.
Google Sign in with Google, if you choose it. What Google collects is covered by Google’s privacy policy. We receive your email address.
Payment provider
TODO: name
Takes payment for founding-member pre-orders on our website. What you enter at checkout. We receive the order, not your card details.
Email provider
TODO: name
Our support mailbox. Emails you send us.
Website host
TODO: name
Serves this website. Standard request logs, such as IP address and pages requested.

We may also disclose data when the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety. If Spellsketch is ever transferred to someone else, this policy keeps applying to your data, and we’ll tell you before anything changes.

08Where it is stored

We are based in Taiwan. We are setting up our database, file storage and servers in Tokyo, Japan, with Supabase and Google Cloud. If we choose a different region, we’ll update this section before your data is stored there.

Some providers, such as AI services, Apple, Google and our email provider, may process data in other countries, including the United States. When data from the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland goes to a country that doesn’t have an adequacy decision, we rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent safeguard in our agreement with the provider. You can ask us for a copy.

09How long we keep it

We keep data until you no longer need it:

Deleting your account doesn’t cancel an App Store subscription. Cancel it in your Apple account settings; see Support.

10Your rights and choices

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

In the app, you can edit and delete members and delete your account. For anything else, email support@spellsketch.com. We may ask you to confirm that the account is yours, for example by writing from the email address on the account. We reply within 15 days to requests to see or copy your data and within 30 days to other requests; if we need longer, we’ll tell you why.

The account holder can make these requests for every member of the account; see section 11.

If you’re in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Every member gets the same safety standard: descriptions are checked before they’re used, pictures are made in advance and reviewed, there is no open-ended image generation, no chat or social features, no ads and no third-party tracking.

12Security

Data is encrypted in transit and, with our providers, at rest. Our servers check that each request reaches only its own account’s data, and only the people who run Spellsketch can access our systems.

13Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we post the new version here and update the date at the top. For important changes, we tell you in the app before they take effect.
